1. 140,000 people die each year in situations where first aid could have saved their lives. This is the same number of people that die from cancer

2. 500,000 children under five years old go to casualty annually as a results of accidents in the home

3. Children can drown in as little as one inch of water

4. It can take less than four minutes for a blocked airway to kill a child but it takes around eight minutes for an ambulance to arrive

5. Over half of road traffic accident deaths occur before Emergency Services arrive. Of those that were preventable deaths, 85% could have been avoided, if first aid had been given before the ambulance arrived.

These truly are scary statistics, particularly when you are most likely to need first aid to assist a family member or friend. Yet less than 25% of British adults have any first aid training.
