Fit Organic Launches Breakthrough Certified Organic Mosquito Repellent
Brazilian Scientists Confirm Proprietary Formula Repels Mosquitos That Transmit Deadly Zika Virus; Organically Certified Safe for Pregnant Women and Children
CINCINNATI, May 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Fit Organic, one of the world's leading makers of USDA-certified organic consumer products, today unveiled its new Mosquito Repellent Spray.
Just in time for summer and what is expected to be a very heavy mosquito season, the breakthrough organic repellent is now available online at Fitorganic.com and Amazon.com. The repellent will also be appearing on retailer shelves soon.
Organically certified safe for pregnant women and children, Fit Organic Mosquito Repellent Spray has been scientifically proven to be as effective as DEET for up to three hours with zero bites, and without the potential harmful side effects of using synthetic pesticides. The Fit Organic Mosquito Repellent Spray was tested by scientists in Brazil specifically against Aedes Aegypti mosquitos—the #1 carrier of the deadly Zika virus. Further, the research showed that the Fit Organic formula is effective against mosquitos carrying the West Nile virus and malaria.
Originally launched by Procter & Gamble, "Fit" was acquired by HealthPro Brands in 2006. Led by former Procter & Gamble executive Todd Wichmann, the company reformulated Fit's line of products, making them USDA-certified organic.
Five years in development, the new Fit Organic Mosquito Repellent Spray is a unique formula comprised of two key ingredients: organic lemongrass grown in Nepal and organic oleic acid derived from sunflowers in the United Kingdom.
"Oleic acid is a natural secretion that is emitted from dying insects; effectively, a 'death scent,'" said Wichmann, president, CEO & founder of HealthPro Brands. "Once the scent is detected, insects avoid the area because they believe something will harm them.1"
Fit Organic first utilized organic oleic acid as part of its produce wash product. Consumers immediately noticed the product was repelling insects as well, which led Wichmann to investigate developing a new organically certified mosquito repellent formula.
Zika is a disease spread to humans primarily through bites from mosquitos– most often the Aedes Aegypti species. The disease can cause symptoms like joint pain, fever and rash, and though generally mild, it can become especially dangerous for women who are pregnant. For those women, being infected with the virus can cause serious birth defects including microcephaly – a condition marked by underdevelopment of a baby's brain.
Brazil has been especially hard hit by the Zika virus outbreak—with scientists looking for new, safer ways to repel mosquitos that could potentially transmit the virus. Fit Organic's proprietary formula was tested by Ecolyzer based in São Paulo, Brazil.
"This is the right product at a critical time," continued Wichmann. "Nothing is more important than protecting mothers and their children from the horrible Zika virus," he said. "We're proud to offer concerned mothers an organic option instead of something synthetic and dangerous like DEET."
Fit Organic Mosquito Repellent Spray is available immediately here in the U.S. and will be made available in Brazil later this summer.
