Fisher House Foundation Dedicates Unique New Fisher House at Dover Air Force Base

DOVER, Del., Nov. 11, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley and General Norton A. Schwartz, Chief of Staff of the Air Force joined Fisher House Foundation Chairman Ken Fisher, President David Coker, Representatives of American Gold Star Mothers, Matthew Denn, Lt. Governor of Delaware and other special guests gathered – on the day before Veterans Day – to officially dedicate the  Fisher House for the Families of the Fallen and Meditation Pavilion on the campus of Dover Air Force Base here today.

The Fisher House for Families of the Fallen is a unique facility among the Foundation's other Fisher Houses currently operating worldwide.  This 8,462 square foot house is equipped with nine (9) suites that are designed to provide short-term, on-base lodging to families who travel to Dover to witness the dignified transfer of their loved ones. 

An adjoining 1,714 square foot Meditation Pavilion will provide a quiet place for families to gather, pray and reflect during their stays at the Fisher House. Built with private donations to Fisher House Foundation, both structures were gifted to the Air Force as part of the ceremony.

Part of President Obama's Nobel Prize Award contribution of $250,000 – the largest gift to any not-for-profit organization from the President's Nobel Award – went into the construction of the Dover Fisher House and Pavilion.

"This is a unique kind of Fisher House, created to provide comfort and solace for families dealing with the worst of war," said Ken Fisher, Chairman of Fisher House Foundation. "At the same time, this new facility is wholly consistent with the Fisher House Mission of providing our military families the love and support they not only need, but to which they are entitled."

Founded in 1990, Fisher House Foundation raises private funds to build "comfort homes" for families of wounded service members, and other military or veteran patients, seeking medical treatment at VA and military hospitals around the world. Since its inception, more than 130,000 families have stayed at one or more Fisher Houses – totaling three million days of lodging at a cost savings of more than $150 million.  The Foundation plans to construct nearly 20 more homes over the next four years.
