Fisher College Vice President Appointed to Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women
BOSTON, May 2, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Fisher College is extremely proud to announce that Governor Charlie Baker appointed Carolina Avellaneda, Vice President of Operations and General Counsel, to the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women.
The Commission is an independent state agency created by the legislature in 1998 to advance women of Massachusetts to full equality in all areas of life by promoting their rights and opportunities. It provides a permanent, effective voice for women of the Commonwealth and is comprised of 19 diverse members who are appointed by the Governor, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Caucus of Women Legislators.
"I am so humbled and honored to have the opportunity to work toward advancing this mission and positioning this state as a leader, not only in equality among the women of the Commonwealth, but all citizens," said Avellaneda. "I look forward to working with my fellow Commissioners, the local and regional commissions throughout Massachusetts, as well as Governor Baker, Lieutenant Governor Polito, and the Legislature to lead us toward the realization of gender equality."
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Carolina Avellaneda immigrated to the United States with her family when she was nine years old. She worked previously at McCarter & English, LLP (formerly Gadsby Hannah) for over 16 years, where she was most recently a partner in the Labor & Employment Law and Business and Financial Services Litigation practice groups. Avellaneda has always been passionate about women and youth issues, serving on her law firm's Women's Initiative, Diversity and Hiring committees. She currently serves as the Chair of the Advisory Board for My Life, My Choice, a non-profit dedicated to ending the commercial sexual exploitation of children in Massachusetts and beyond; she is a founding board member of the Latino Legacy Fund, whose mission is to use a permanent endowment to strengthen the diverse Latino community of Greater Boston; and she serves on the Corporate Advisory Board for ALPFA-Boston (formerly the Association of Latino Professional in Finance and Accounting). Avellaneda holds a B.A. from Wellesley College and a J.D. from Boston University School of Law.
