Fisher College Student Veteran Association Awarded $10,000 for New Vet Center
Part of nationwide Vet Center Initiative by Student Veterans of America and The Home Depot Foundation to support veteran centers on college campuses
BOSTON, June 27, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Walking onto a college campus after leaving the military can be a disorienting experience for student veterans. That's why The Home Depot Foundation and Student Veterans of America (SVA) are awarding the SVA chapter at Fisher College $10,000 for its veteran center on campus, as part of their Vet Center Initiative.
The newly formed Student Veteran Association was established at Fisher College during the end of the academic year. There are currently 16 members. The purpose of the organization is to provide student veterans with a source of support, advocacy, and camaraderie. The veteran center will offer the organization a place to meet, both as a group and socially. Construction is set to begin July 1 and will be completed by the end of this calendar year.
"As a designated Military Friendly School, we are very proud that Student Veterans of America and the Home Depot Foundation have recognized Fisher College and its student veterans in this way," said Dr. Neil Trotta, Veterans Liaison for Fisher College. "Because our student veterans tend to be a little older than the traditional college student and have had some very significant life experiences, it's important to provide them with a space where they fit in and feel comfortable."
Student Veterans of America and The Home Depot Foundation teamed up in 2014 to launch the Vet Center Initiative, offering SVA chapters a chance to compete for up to $10,000 in grant money to build or renovate a veteran center. By 2015, 61 campuses earned $500,000 to build or rehabilitate veteran centers that benefit more than 30,000 student veterans. This year, 50 campus communities were awarded grants of up to $10,000.
