10 Gbps Market Growth from Emulex, Intel, While Mellanox Spearheads 40 Gbps Server Attach

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., May 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- According to a newly published report by Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the networking and telecommunications industries, shipments of 10 Gbps Ethernet controllers and adapters saw double-digit growth during the first quarter of 2012. In the next few quarters as server manufacturers introduce new products based on Intel's server platform named "Romley", Dell'Oro Group predicts acceleration in 10 Gbps shipments.

"Controller shipments surged while adapters rose modestly as the two form factors ship at different points in the supply chain" said Sameh Boujelbene, Analyst covering Controllers and Adapters at Dell'Oro Group. "Controllers are sold when servers are manufactured while adapters are sold when servers ship to the customer. The bulk of the market's growth came from two vendors Emulex and Intel while results from other manufacturers were about even with the prior quarter. We surmise Emulex's growth was propelled by HP, while Intel's was propelled by a variety of manufacturers which standardize on the Intel server platform, such as Oracle, Super Micro and contract manufacturers like Quanta", added Boujelbene.

According to the report, several milestones were achieved during the quarter: Mellanox shipped its 40 Gbps server connectivity and top-of-rack switch bundle, while Broadcom, Cisco, Intel and QLogic began shipping "Daughter Adapters" or "Modular LOM". The report also shows a proliferation in FCoE ports which propelled Emulex into the revenue-leadership position in this segment.
