First Pool Dedicated to Adult-Learn-to-Swim Opens May 1 in Florida
SARASOTA, Fla., April 27, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- A non-profit organization will open the first-ever pool dedicated to teaching adults to be safe in deep water: The Miracle Swimming for Adults Learning and Research Center at 582 McIntosh Road, Sarasota, FL. The opening party takes place from 1-5 p.m. on May 1, 2016 and is open to all.
Miracle Swimming for Adults, Inc. (MSA) has taught adults to overcome their fear of deep water and to swim since 1983. As the only national organization dedicated to adult learn-to-swim, it has made discoveries that are slowly changing the way learning to swim is understood:
Adults require different lessons than children
Learning to swim is learning to be safe in water over one's head
Learning to do freestyle is not learning to swim: it is learning to swim efficiently
A student can be safe in deep water without learning strokes
Learning to swim is simpler than originally thought and can be fun for all adults
MSA's motto since 1983 has been, "If it's not fun, don't do it." Five thousand adults from fifty states and fifteen countries have traveled to MSA's locations to learn in lessons that teach material not available in their home states. Its graduates named it Miracle Swimming. Eight graduates have gone on to become Miracle Swimming instructors.
The research aspect of MSA will provide opportunities for researchers to study the many unanswered questions about learning to swim for adults. MSA believes its innovations will spread globally once data is available to demonstrate best practices.
The newly renovated pool, which formerly belonged to the Flanzer Jewish Community Center, has been fitted to the needs of adults learning to swim. The two-foot pool will be used for MSA's Ultra-Beginning classes and "DIY LTS:" Do It Yourself Learn-to-Swim based on following the steps of MSA's book and DVD. The large pool, six lanes / twenty-five meters, will have a platform in the middle of the six-foot deep end where students can rest. Classes this summer and fall include MSA's regular Beginning and Next Step classes, Freestyle, Swimming for Sinkers, classes for women-only and men-only, classes in Spanish, and children's Miracle Swimming classes to prevent teens and youth who are afraid in water from becoming adults who can't swim.
MSA has provided full scholarships to parents of children at Girls, Inc. of Sarasota and to children at RL Taylor Community Complex and Wetherington Boys and Girls Club in Sarasota. This summer, MSA will partner with The Salvation Army to give free lessons for summer camp children and their parents. Teaching both parents and children, MSA seeks to make whole families safe in water. MSA teaches that parents should know how to swim before their children so that they provide informed messages about swimming and water safety and make good decisions about where children and families swim.
Licensed Miracle Swimming Instructors are available in Sarasota, Brandon, and West Palm Beach, Florida, Seattle, Columbus, Ohio, Decatur, Alabama, Allentown, PA, Rockland County, NY, Richmond, VA, Kaneohe Oahu, Hawaii, Boston, Palm Springs, San Francisco and Marin County, CA.
Sarasota class schedules will be available at the opening party.
