First Patient from Abu Dhabi Arrives in South Korea for Medical Treatment

SEOUL, South Korea, Jan. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- The Ministry of Health and Welfare and Korea Health Industry Development Institute announced that the first patient referred from the Health Authority-Abu Dhabi (HAAD) arrived in South Korea on Dec. 20, 2011 and was successfully treated.

The Korean government arranged for domestic hospitals to sign a pact on patient referral and transfer with the Abu Dhabi when HAAD Chairman Mohammed Sultan Al Hameli and CEO Zaid Daoud Al Siksek visited South Korea on Nov. 25, 2011.

HAAD signed a pact with Samsung Medical Center, Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul St. Mary's Hospital and AsanMedicalCenter.

The first patient from Abu Dhabi is a male born in 1983 to received treatment at the Seoul National University Hospital. His vocal cords were damaged due to the use of respirators for prolonged periods during childhood. HAAD had granted treatment approval at the Seoul National University Hospital and announced later on, the patient had been successfully treated during the span of Dec. 21 to 23, 2011. The hospital provided the patient with the necessary medical services including airport pick-up/drop-off, interpretation and accommodations, among others.

HAAD has referred a second patient to AsanMedicalCenter, which will take over kidney transplantation procedures once the operation is confirmed feasible. The patient will visit South Korea with the donor. This patient was already considered "unlikely to be healed" by numerous American and British physicians. If the transplantation succeeds, it will provide an invaluable opportunity to show the world South Korea's advanced medical technique.

Similarly, the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) began to express strong interest in referring their patients to South Korean hospitals.

A pilot patient from Dubai, a male born in 1943, arrived in South Korea on Dec. 19, 2011 and received an edoscopic mucosal resection.
