First Lady Susan Corbett Welcomes the Public to 'Patriotic Penn's Woods'
Native Pennsylvania plants featured in Governor's Residence garden tour
HARRISBURG, Pa., July 8, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania First Lady Susan Corbett today opened the Governor's Residence gardens to the public for the "Patriotic Penn's Woods" garden tour. It was part of the free, monthly "Second Sunday" events slated throughout the summer.
The family friendly, patriotic-themed event was held just days after Independence Day and showcased the native plants of Pennsylvania. Visitors learned about shrubs, wildflowers, perennials and ferns typically seen across the state.
"Not only can people enjoy the beauty of the gardens, but it's a great learning experience thanks to the master gardeners who are graciously donating their time, providing gardening tips and sharing their expertise," said First Lady Susan Corbett.
The highlight of the garden tour was Penn's Woods, which features the state tree and flower. Visitors also learned about native and invasive plants, how to build and install a bluebird house and more.
"The governor and I are committed to making the Governor's Residence open to the public as much as possible," said Mrs. Corbett. "Through our 'Second Sunday' events, people can spend a Sunday afternoon enjoying the beautiful gardens, learn some interesting gardening tips or take in an art exhibit."
"Pennsylvania: A Commemorative Portrait" by Pennsylvania artist Nick Ruggieri is currently on exhibition in the Governor's Residence State Rooms.
Participating organizations included the Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Dauphin County; the Bluebird Society of Pennsylvania; Meadow Wood Nursery; the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art; and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
Upcoming "Second Sunday" events are: Aug. 12 - Nature's Pollinators; and Sept. 9 - Gallery Walk. For more information, visit www.pa.gov/firstlady or contact the First Lady's Office at 717-787-1965.
