ROCHESTER, N.H., Sept. 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Frisbie Memorial Hospital is excited to announce Ophthalmologist Dr. Warren Goldblatt the first in N.H. to implant the Tecnis Symfony® Intraocular Lens (IOL), which is the first and only extended depth of focus intraocular lens available in the United States for treating cataracts.
According to Abbott Medical Optics, manufacturer of the Tecnis Symfony IOL, which is one category in a new family of IOLs, "extended depth of focus IOLs provide high-quality, continuous vision – from near to far and points in between – and may reduce the overall wearing of glasses."
The Tecnis Symfony IOL is approved by the U.S. Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of cataracts. The FDA also approved the Tecnis Symfony Toric IOL for treating people with astigmatism.
The National Eye Institute (NEI) states that, by age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery.
Common symptoms of a cataract are:
- Cloudy or blurry vision
- Colors seem faded
- Glare. Headlights, lamps, or sunlight may appear too bright. Poor night vision.
- Double vision or multiple vision in one eye
- Frequent prescription changes in your eyeglasses or contact lenses
