HOUSTON, April 1, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Center for Information and Study on Clinical Research Participation (CISCRP) is pleased to announce AWARE for All Houston, a free event designed to promote understanding and dialogue around cancer clinical research participation. The event will be hosted in collaboration with MD Anderson at the Windsor Village Kingdom Builders' Center (KBC) on Friday, May 9th from 9AM to 12PM and will feature free health screenings, informational exhibits, meaningful presentations from prominent Houston medical professionals and community patients involved in cancer research, as well as free food and giveaways. Funding for this event is provided by CISCRP's national AWARE sponsor EMD Serono, Inc., a subsidiary of Merck KGaA Darmstadt, Germany, and local sponsors Windsor Village UMC Ministries and the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences Community Engagement and Research Component.
This free event is open to the public; however, advanced registration is strongly encouraged through www.awareforall.org or by calling 1-877-MED-HERO.
"In cancer care, clinical trials can offer viable treatment options for patients. The goal of the AWARE for All event is to help our diverse communities to reclaim their power and understand ALL their treatment options so that they can make the best decision for themselves and their families," explained Lynne Nguyen, Director of Population & Community Core at the Center for Community-Engaged Translational Research at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Ken Getz, Founder of CISCRP added, "There is a need for general education about the clinical research process including the risks, benefits, and the rights of participants. This is an important opportunity for the Houston community to work together to address this need and to recognize those who give the gift of participation."
