Firefighter Ball Raises Money for Operation Warm
Coats can aid in reducing health risks like colds, pneumonia, and hypothermia, that is why doTERRA donated to the Frenchtown Fire Department ball to assist in keeping children warm.
PLEASANT GROVE, Utah, Feb. 24, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Frenchtown Fire Department in Monroe, Michigan teamed up with Operation Warm to provide impoverished children with coats for the cold winter. On November 28, 2015, the firefighters held their first-ever ball to raise money for new coats. The ball also included a silent auction to maximize the funds raised. doTERRA International was excited to donate a gift basket for the auction and help the firefighters and Operation Warm further their mission of keeping children warm and healthy.
Operation Warm's motto, "more than just a coat," serves as a powerful reminder of the impact a coat can have in a child's life. A coat plays a key role in helping to fight off colds, hypothermia, and pneumonia. Cold viruses, like the rhinovirus, are initially obtained through the air we breathe and the things we touch, but cold weather can agitate these viruses and can make them worse and harder to get rid of; if a cold worsens it can also lead to more extreme infections such as pneumonia. As far as hypothermia is concerned, having a lack of warm clothing can be a direct cause in the onset of this illness. By providing coats for children, Operation Warm is not only keeping children warm, but they are decreasing health risks.
The function of Operation Warm also allows children to attend school more frequently and increase sociality in their communities. Because many impoverished families are only able to provide for the most basic necessities of survival such as food, heat, and rent, having proper winter clothing often becomes a secondary priority. This problem usually results in school absences on cold days, which leads to a lack of educational and social opportunities for children. In an effort to combat this effect, Operation Warm has raised money for and given new coats to over 1.7 million children throughout America. Their efforts, and the efforts of the Frenchtown Fire Department, are changing the future of children one coat at a time.
