SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Jan. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- According to a recent report by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, nearly 9.5 million cosmetic procedures were carried out in 2010; surgical procedures accounted for 17 percent of total cosmetic procedures. These numbers represent an increase of almost 9 percent in cosmetic surgical procedures.
The most common cosmetic surgery procedure of 2010 was breast augmentation, and the most popular non-surgical procedure was Botulinum Toxin Type A (also known as Botox) injections, with almost 2.5 million procedures reported last year, far surpassing other common non-surgical procedures including: hyaluronic acid, laser hair removal, laser skin resurfacing and chemical peels.
Americans spent an estimated $10.7 billion on cosmetic procedures last year; $1.9 billion was spent on injectable procedures alone.
Several states, including New Jersey, currently charge what has been dubbed a "Botax"—a 6 percent tax on elective cosmetic surgery procedures, including Botox injections. But the New Jersey legislature has just voted to phase out the tax; the bill is currently waiting for approval from Governor Chris Christie.
Proponents of the tax say the state needs the tax-revenue generated from elective surgeries. But opponents fear that people will simply choose to take their business to other states that don't tax cosmetic surgery procedures.
