Financial Education Benefits Center: International Tolerance Day Celebrates Unity, Harmony, and Acceptance
SAN RAMON, Calif., Nov. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- November 16th is International Tolerance Day, which marks the anniversary of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) adoption of the Declaration of Principles of Tolerance. Drafted in 1995, this declaration lays out the principle of tolerance, which is "the respect, acceptance, and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human." The document also stresses the importance of respect for other's beliefs, cultures, and freedoms on both a personal and political level as a core human rights issue. Financial Education Benefits Center (FEBC), a health and wellness member benefits company, acknowledges the importance of widespread tolerance for the well-being of people from all nations and cultures.
"We're a diverse nation, a diverse world," said Jennifer Martinez, Manager at FEBC. "Coming from a place of tolerance allows everyone to live in harmony."
The purpose of the International Day of Tolerance is to reflect on and promote tolerance, respect, appreciation, and cooperation among the world's cultures; it's a celebration and exploration of what it means to be human and a member of a global community. In a time where intolerance and xenophobic rhetoric has been brought to the forefront of American news, International Tolerance Day may feel particularly poignant. One report released in May of this year stated that hate crimes have been on the rise over the past four years; the ten largest US cities saw a 12 percent increase compared to 2017.
The United Nations states that embracing tolerant attitudes requires several actions. Tolerance requires that governments enforce it through equal access to services and laws that ban and punish discrimination or hate crimes. In addition, fostering a culture of tolerance involves education, individual awareness, and local solutions. Research has shown that people's well-being is directly affected by their society's general and intercultural tolerance. They tend to have better control over negative emotions, forgive other's mistakes, and have increased adaptability to changing situations. Those experiencing intolerance or who live in places with intolerant views should take extra steps to ensure their mental and emotional well-being doesn't suffer. FEBC's membership benefits discount many health and wellness programs that are designed to support a healthy, happy lifestyle.
"Tolerance is the backbone of a civilized society," said Martinez. "We should all be treating others how we ourselves would like to be treated."
