Financial Education Benefits Center: How Those With Depression Can Access the Benefits of Exercising
SAN RAMON, Calif., Aug. 23, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Finding the energy to do anything "extra," such as exercise, can be extremely demanding for those suffering from depression. Even regular, required tasks such as working, going to school or eating can drain energy and cause avoidant behavior for those burdened by mental health disorders. Though numerous studies have demonstrated that exercise can ease symptoms of depression, how can those affected overcome mental health challenges enough to move their bodies? Slowly and simply, suggests a Bustle author, Kyli Rodriguez-Cayro, who suffers from mental illness. Financial Education Benefits Center (FEBC), a company that offers its members benefits and discounts for exercise and other health services, encourages clients to embrace a gentle and non-judgmental approach as they begin exercising.
"It is hard enough to get an exercise routine going, but if you are already exhausted and depleted, it can seem impossible," said Jennifer Martinez, manager at FEBC. "We encourage all our clients, but especially those suffering from mental health disorders, to start simply and make use of our many benefits and discounts focused on physical and mental health and wellness."
For those suffering from mental health issues, according to Rodriguez-Cayro, the most important thing is to start instead of worrying about "shoulds." A 20-minute stroll or an easy stretch is a great way to simply move the body. There is no need to head to a gym, or even outside, if that is a problem. There are dozens of home exercise apps to help. Even Amazon's Alexa has the skills available to provide coaching. Planning is also helpful. The simple act of setting out workout clothes for when an individual gets home can be very helpful. No matter what, exercisers should always listen to both body and mind and be gentle and uncritical as they begin.
There are some clear reasons that exercise is good for depression and other health issues. Increasing heart rate with body movement releases endorphins which are proven to block pain and reduce anxiety. Exercise also regulates cortisol, which, when overproduced, increases fear and anxiety. There is also proof that exercise stimulates both testosterone and human growth hormone, both of which can help with muscle growth and metabolism, while also reducing fat. These are only a few of the proven health and wellness benefits.
FEBC has a variety of health and wellness resources available to members of all plan levels, including discounts for many different kinds of workouts such as yoga, pilates and cardio training at participating locations. Telehealth benefits may assist FEBC members to find help for mental health concerns through its services. Members can also speak with health professionals about physical symptoms through a few different telehealth benefits. A pharmacy discount can also be used at participating locations to obtain prescribed medicine. FEBC members also have access to numerous other wellness benefits that may be helpful. It's important to note that FEBC benefits are not insurance and are not intended to replace insurance.
"We encourage our members to exercise on their own, but we want people to remember that they are not alone and that there are many resources available to help," Martinez said. "Call a representative at FEBC to see if any of our numerous benefits could help you."
