SAN RAMON, Calif., March 5, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- World Glaucoma Week is coming up (March 11–18) and that means the national focus is on vision. No one can deny the importance of eye health, but a recent survey showed that people do not address their eye health by having regular eye exams. Furthermore, the survey respondents demonstrated a lack of knowledge about eye conditions. Financial Education Benefits Center (FEBC), a membership benefits company specializing in health and financial wellness, encourages regular eye exams and offers eligible members discounts to participating vision providers.
"Even individuals who don't need glasses should get their eyes checked regularly," said Jennifer Martinez, Manager at FEBC. "It may seem unnecessary to some, but eye doctors check more than just vision and can help keep eyes healthy into old age."
Regular eye exams are important for more than just checking vision. Eye doctors check for common eye conditions that, if caught early, are typically treatable. However, caught too late, eye diseases like macular degeneration, cataracts, and, yes, glaucoma can cause lasting damage to the eyes. Patients can even discuss minor things like eye strain and dry eyes from extended screen use with their eye doctor to see if they can minimize the irritation.
Vision loss and eye conditions become more likely with age, so it's especially important for older Americans to bump up their exam schedule to annual eye exams. However, without vision insurance, those exams may get costly.
Eligible FEBC members have access to a vision benefit that provides discounts on eye exams at participating vision providers. The benefit also offers discounts for eyeglasses, sunglasses, contact lenses, and even corrective surgery.
"We use our eyes every day and hope to use them as long as possible," said Martinez. "It's not the end of the world if you lose your vision, but if it's avoidable, it's worth it to take time out of a busy schedule to get an eye exam. We hope our vision benefit helps our members do just that."
