Arizona's 2014 Cox Conserves Heroes Finalists
Cass Blodgett is a volunteer citizen scientist on the North Mountain Plant Inventory Project. He collects and documents North Mountain's diversity of flora, teaches the public about native flora and leads interpretative hikes. His commitment to documenting the area's biological diversity helps spread plant knowledge with the community. His environmental nonprofit of choice is Arizona Native Plant Society.
As a volunteer, Darren Chapman raised funds to create 16 acres of community gardens that were previously vacant lots used by gangs. By selling the produce at local farmers markets, he is able to employ at-risk teens to cultivate the gardens. He also hosts garden demonstrations and social events twice a month for the local community. His environmental nonprofit of choice is Tigermountain Foundation.
Greg Clark uses his engineering expertise to save the area's burrowing owls that nest underground. The burrows are often crushed by heavy equipment, so he has led hundreds of volunteers in a movement to create artificial burrows. More than 500 displaced owls have successfully been relocated. His environmental nonprofit of choice is Wild At Heart.
Sponsored locally by Goodwill of Central Arizona, Arizona's 2014 Cox Conserves Hero will be announced in mid-August.
Melinda Gulick from Scottsdale and Brad Lancaster from Tucson are previous recipients of Arizona's Cox Conserves Heroes award.
Cox Conserves Heroes was created in partnership through The Trust for Public Land and Cox Enterprises, the parent company of Cox Communications, to honor environmental volunteers who are creating or preserving outdoor spaces. Funds are donated on behalf of the finalists and winners to their local environmental nonprofits of choice. Through the Cox Conserves Heroes program, nearly $400,000 has been donated to environmental nonprofits and more than 130 volunteers have been recognized.
Cox Conserves Heroes takes place in Arizona (Phoenix and Tucson); California (Orange County, San Diego and Santa Barbara); Georgia (Atlanta); Louisiana (Acadiana, Baton Rouge and New Orleans); Virginia (Fairfax County/Fredericksburg, Hampton Roads and Roanoke) and Washington (Seattle).
