Final EMC Update -- EMCs Enter Final Phase of Restoration
ATLANTA, Jan. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As of 5:15 a.m., less than 300 Electric Membership Cooperative (EMC) customers statewide are without power as a result of the snow/ ice storm, and electricity is expected to be restored to all EMC customers later today. Electricity has been restored to all metro Atlanta customers.
The remaining customers are located in central Georgia, primarily in Washington, Johnson, Laurens, and Emanuel Counties. The EMCs ask for continued patience as local as well as out-of-area line crews are progressing through the time-consuming process of clearing downed trees from power lines.
Georgia EMC is the statewide trade association representing the state's 42 EMCs, Oglethorpe Power Corp., Georgia Transmission Corp. and Georgia System Operations Corp. Collectively, Georgia's customer-owned EMCs provide electricity and related services to more than four million people, half of Georgia's population, across 73 percent of the state's land area.
Georgia Transmission, a not-for-profit cooperative owned by 39 EMCs, owns more than 3000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines and more than 600 substations. These facilities deliver power to Georgia's EMCs who serve nearly 50 percent of Georgia's population (4.5 million).
