Carmine can also be identified on food labels as crimson lake, cochineal, natural red 4, C.I. 75470 or E120. This filler is made from ground-up cochineal insects, which is really just mashed red beetles. A number of manufacturers have resorted to labeling it not as carmine, but instead as "natural color," thereby guaranteeing that most consumers will really never know if they are eating these insects.
