In Transfast's second "Working in America" survey, "faith and positive attitude" was the second most-popular answer, followed by "good work habits," "skills," and finally, "contacts" – meaning, who you know.
The results are based on a survey of some 6,000 people from the Philippines who live in the U.S. and send money home, fielded by global money transfer firm Transfast.
Filipinos largely credited their education for putting them in a good position to get the job they wanted in the U.S., with 69 percent saying their Philippine education opened doors for them. However, some 44 percent said they required additional education in the U.S. to work in their field in the U.S., while 56 percent said they did not.
Filipino respondents strongly agree that their culture puts a premium on education, with 85 percent agreeing with that statement.
Of those polled, 57 percent would want to get a degree in the same field again. Of the 38 percent who said if given the chance, they'd pursue a degree in a different field, 35 percent said they would choose the medical and health professions, followed by computer sciences (15 percent) and business (12 percent). The reasons they gave for choosing another field included "more job opportunities," "better salary," and "more suited to my skills and interests."
For those who might be considering working in America, here are the occupations that respondents said paid the best in the U.S., given the education required:
- Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations – 62%
- Computer and Mathematical Occupations – 33%
- Healthcare Support Occupations – 28%
- Architecture and Engineering Occupations – 27%
- Business and Financial Operations – 18%
