First-ever High Level Visit from Russia to Expand Ties with Pacific Island Nation
SUVA, Fiji, Jan. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Republic of Fiji is preparing for the first-ever high-level visit by an official from the Russian Federation. H.E. Mr. Sergey Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, will be visiting Fiji on February 1-2. The trip underscores the important role Fiji serves as a hub of trade and diplomacy in the Pacific region.
"Fiji looks forward to Russian Minister Lavrov's visit and the potential it brings to explore areas of opportunity — including investment, minerals, energy, tourism, education and medicine," said Fijian Minister of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola. "Expanding ties with Russia is just another example of Fiji's work to diversify its global relationships and strengthen the Fijian economy."
The visit is the culmination of talks that began with Russian officials last year on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. In recent months, Russia's Ambassador to Fiji — based in Canberra, Australia — has visited Fiji to discuss this upcoming trip.
