Fighting Student Loan Repayment and Cancer at the Same Time May Not Be Necessary Soon, Notes AFBC
EMERYVILLE, Calif., Oct. 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Student loans can be tricky to handle even under what most people consider regular circumstances. When extraneous circumstances happen, it might make repayment needlessly difficult and borrowers may feel that they have little way out of a hard situation. American Financial Benefits Center (AFBC), a document preparation service company, has helped many borrowers apply for repayment programs, including those who need assistance due to health-related issues. A Colorado congressman has backed a bill, though, that may help certain student loan borrowers even more.
"The student loan crisis has many factors playing into it and new ways to handle that problem are needed for the variety of struggles that borrowers face," said Sara Molina, manager at AFBC. Representative Ed Perlmutter recently introduced a bill that would pause student loan repayment for borrowers currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Called the Deferment for Active Cancer Treatment, which Perlmutter also called a "common sense" bill, is said to be a bipartisan solution that would let borrowers undergoing treatment focus more on their health and encourage them to repay when they are done recovering. In 2018 alone over 1.7 million new cases of cancer are estimated to develop, so this kind of measure would ease a huge burden that many borrowers may have to face.
AFBC strongly believes that repayment shouldn't have to be a struggle and has helped thousands of borrowers apply for federal income-driven repayment plans that have potentially lowered borrowers' monthly payments and gotten them on track for student loan forgiveness after 20-25 years of being in the program. Those helped include many borrowers who have had limited funds due to being on disability because of a hardship like cancer. "Whether a borrower is struggling with repayment because of work or health-related issues, AFBC is dedicated to helping its clients, first through the application process and then the yearly recertification," said Molina.
