Feeding America Asks Public to Sign a Pledge to Volunteer at a Local Food Bank in 2016
CHICAGO, Jan. 11, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Each January, Americans resolve to make their lives better in the year to come. Feeding America®, the largest domestic hunger-relief organization, is launching a national volunteer pledge and also challenging the public to commit to helping improve the lives of the 48 million Americans who face hunger in the United States.
Hunger is an issue in every community in America. One in seven people, including 15 million children, are food insecure. Supporting hunger relief by taking a pledge to volunteer will help millions of families, children and seniors in need gain access to nutrient-rich food needed to thrive.
"The new year brings a new opportunity for everyone to help make their communities better," said Diana Aviv, CEO at Feeding America. "The goals of Feeding America's national volunteer pledge are to help our neighbors who struggle with food insecurity, and to rally Americans to take an active role in the fight to solve hunger."
Volunteer activities can range from packing, sorting and distributing food; helping to staff an event; or providing a food bank access to specialized skills, such as carpentry, marketing or technology. Follow these simple steps to start making a difference in your community:
The Feeding America nationwide network of 200 food banks provides food and resources to community members who are food insecure and may not know where they will find their next meal. Every year, with the help of almost 10 million hours of volunteered time, the network distributes more than 3.7 billion meals to people in need. However, there is still more to be done to solve hunger in America.
By pledging to volunteer to fight hunger, the Feeding America network of food banks can carry out its mission for a hunger-free America. Every pledge made and volunteer shift served helps to ensure that more families will not have to go without food needed to thrive.
