Fifty Milwaukee Teens Kick Off Johnson Controls' Conservation Leadership Corps

MILWAUKEE, July 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Fifty Milwaukee teens will have summer jobs and gain valuable skills with the kick off of Johnson Controls' (NYSE: JCI) sixth annual Conservation Leadership Corps (CLC) summer youth jobs program. Since Johnson Controls launched the CLC in Milwaukee in 2006, more than 350 students have participated in the program, which provides meaningful, paid employment focused on environmental stewardship, leadership and teamwork skills. Other partners in the CLC include the Student Conservation Association (SCA), Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board (MAWIB) and the Milwaukee County Parks System.

The six-week program begins with a week of job-readiness and financial literacy training. Following the orientation program, crews of six to 12 students led by SCA crew leaders will participate in a variety of conservation projects in Milwaukee County parks, including:

• Adopt-a-beach – Crews will pick up trash at Milwaukee-area beaches and conduct water quality testing and analysis.
• Chiwaukee Prairie restoration – Participants will develop and maintain trails, remove invasive species and plant native plants.
• Southwest Airlines volunteers – Teams of employees from Southwest Airlines will visit the Milwaukee CLC in late July to assist with conservation projects and help educate participants.
• Green Jobs Day – On July 29, CLC participants will take part in an environmentally focused career day at Johnson Controls' headquarters in Glendale. The event will feature remarks from Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.

In addition to Johnson Controls' support, the program receives support from the Baird Foundation, Greater Milwaukee Foundation, Harley-Davidson Foundation, Forest County Potawatomi Community Foundation, SAP America, Inc., Rotary Club of Milwaukee and the Wisconsin Energy Foundation. In addition, The Timberland Company donated 50 pairs of work boots.

Johnson Controls also supports the CLC program in Baltimore and Detroit, as well as programs in China, Mexico, England, Germany, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
