Fifth World Scholar-Athlete Games Sets Lofty Objectives
KINGSTON, R.I., June 17, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --The Fifth World Scholar-Athlete Games (WSAG), an initiative of the Institute for International Sport, opens on June 26 at the University of Hartford with objectives far different than the thousands of specialty camps that have sprung up throughout the United States. The WSAG will welcome scholar-athletes and scholar-artists from dozens of countries and many American States. The program includes daily activity in each participant's chosen specialty, from basketball to creative writing. At the core of the WSAG is forging friendships among future leaders.
On June 26, Amir Dossal, acclaimed former Executive Director of the United Nations Partnerships, will address the scholar-athletes and scholar-artists on the importance of forging alliances that will result in bringing about a lasting world peace.
Each day at the Scholar-Athlete Games is directed at a specific theme. On June 27, Linda McMahon, recent Connecticut Gubernatorial candidate, will be the principle speaker addressing the theme of "social responsibility." That evening, the band Dispatch, fresh off a sold out nationwide tour, will perform a private concert with a twist. The concert will include a number of Dispatch hits and exchange in extensive Q&A with the participants. Dispatch has become internationally known as a band with a social conscience. The three band members are all active in various social entrepreneurial initiatives, including a program entitled Lacrosse the Nations, headed by band member Brad Corrigan. Lacrosse the Nations unifies the lacrosse community to sustainably improve education and health while creating hope and opportunity for children in need.
When the WSAG concludes on June 30, the scholar-athletes and scholar-artists will then take part in another initiative of the Institute for International Sport - the World Youth Peace Summit (WYPS). This program runs from July 1 to 4 at the University of Hartford and is also open to all ages. Featured speakers include General Colin Powell and Nobel Laureate Jody Williams.
The WYPS's mission is to facilitate the development of participant initiatives that will contribute to lasting world peace. Initiatives can be large scale or on a grassroots level. At the conclusion of the WYPS, the Institute for International Sport will open the Center for Social Entrepreneurship. The Center for Social Entrepreneurship will cultivate and help manage the many peace initiatives that will spring up throughout the world as a result of the 2011 World Scholar-Athlete Games and World Youth Peace Summit.
