Fifth Annual Andrew J. Goodpaster Prize to be Awarded

Honoring Achievement in Military Scholarship

WASHINGTON, June 5, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Veterans Center is proud to announce the awarding of the 2012 Andrew J. Goodpaster Prize to Dr. Mackubin Thomas Owens, Professor of National Security Affairs for the Naval War College.  The prize and accompanying lecture will take place at 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at the Army & Navy Club in downtown Washington, DC.

The prize was inaugurated to honor the legacy of General Andrew J. Goodpaster, one of America's most esteemed military men of the 20th century.  A highly decorated veteran of World War II, Goodpaster went on to serve as Staff Secretary to President Eisenhower and later Supreme Allied Commander of NATO Forces.  He was famously called out of retirement in 1977 to take over as Superintendent of West Point following a notorious cheating scandal the previous year, helping to bring stability and credibility back to the institution.  General Goodpaster was among the earliest supporters of the World War II Veterans Committee, the predecessor of the American Veterans Center.

General Goodpaster was viewed as the ideal "soldier-scholar" by his peers, holding an M.S. in Engineering, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in International Affairs from Princeton, and was the author of numerous publications on military and international affairs.  The Goodpaster Prize was created by the American Veterans Center to honor his legacy, and the impact of "soldier-scholars" in his mold.  Previous honorees include Dr. Lewis Sorley, LTG Dave Palmer, LTC Carlo D'Este, and Bing West.

The 2012 honoree, Dr. Mackubin Thomas Owens, served as an infantry platoon leader in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart.  He holds a Ph.D. in Politics from the University of Dallas and an MA in Economics from the University of Oklahoma.  He is currently Professor of National Security Affairs for the Naval War College, as well as a contributing editor to National Review.  He is a senior fellow at the Program on National Security of the Foreign Policy Research Institute, and edits its journal, Orbis. Dr. Owens is the author of many articles and books, and will be speaking on his latest book, US Civil-Military Relations After 9/11: Renegotiating the Civil-Military Bargain, as part of this year's Goodpaster Lecture.
