Field Poll Showing 69% Support for Proposition 45 Will Trigger Insurance Industry Ad Deluge, Says Consumer Watchdog Campaign
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Aug. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A Field Poll showing 69% public approval for Prop 45 means that consumers will almost certainly face an avalanche of deceptive insurance company ads designed to scare and confuse voters, warned Consumer Watchdog Campaign.
Proposition 45 will require health insurers to get approval for rate hikes and gives the insurance commissioner the power to reject unreasonable rate increases. It applies the same voter-approved rules to health insurance that regulate auto and home insurance in California, and have saved California drivers over $100 billion since 1988 according to the Consumer Federation of America.
"Proposition 45 will put the brakes on out-of-control rate increases that keep health insurance unaffordable for Californians," said Carmen Balber with Consumer Watchdog Campaign.
Health insurance companies have raised over $37 million against Proposition 45 and are scheduled to start a television advertising blitzkrieg on Labor Day. They hope to scare consumers by claiming it will interfere with California's health insurance exchange, cause delays and increase costs.
Proposition 45 will also allow the insurance commissioner to prevent the use of premium dollars to subsidize political spending, such the $37 million insurers have put up to defeat Prop 45, and extravagance, like the $2.5 - $8 million luxury skybox at the new 49ers football stadium that "non-profit" insurance company Blue Shield has purchased.
California's top five health insurance companies giving to oppose Proposition 45 are:
Kaiser: |
$14,590,350 |
WellPoint / Anthem Blue Cross: |
$12,770,000 |
Blue Shield: |
$9,693,200 |
HealthNet: |
$135,000 |
United HealthCare: |
$70,000 |
Health insurance companies have proposed over $250 million in rate increases that were found to be unreasonable, but that California regulators had no power to reject. More than 35 other states regulate health insurance rates, but not California.
