Current Escape Triathlon Series point leader Jason West will be competing in the event, marking his very first time racing in California. "I've heard the surf can get pretty big in California, which could definitely make for an exciting swim for both the athletes and the spectators," said West. "I had an incredible season last year and look forward to racing among such an impressive list of pro athletes in the Surf City Escape Triathlon."
The Olympic distance Surf City Escape Triathlon will begin with a challenging 1-mile open water swim in the Pacific Ocean, entering through the same beach break as the world-renowned U.S. Open of Surfing. A 12-mile, double-loop bike course will then take athletes along the breathtaking Pacific Coast Highway. Showcasing the Pacific Ocean coastline, the entire course is flat and fast. Coveted road closures along Pacific Coast Highway will allow athletes plenty of room for a safe, fast ride and for spectators to capture all the action. The 6.2-mile run will take athletes along the beach for a partial deep sand run then back to the spectator-friendly beachfront finish area.
"I am looking forward to kicking off my 2018 season at the inaugural Surf City Escape Triathlon," said current Escape Triathlon Series point leader Sarah Haskins. "I love racing in California because of the great weather and perfect racing conditions."
The top three finishers per age group coveted entry slots into the 2018 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. First place finishers in each age group will receive a complimentary race entry.
