FHLB Dallas Helps Build Habitat Home in Historic Joppa Neighborhood

DALLAS, Sept. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Employees of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (FHLB Dallas) will join together to build a Habitat for Humanity home at 4607 Cherbourg Street in the historic Joppa neighborhood of Dallas. The project will kick off Saturday, September 12, 2015, and continue through the end of November. The media is encouraged to attend. Details are provided below.

Once built, the home will be occupied by Gloria Gonzales and her three children. FHLB Dallas employees will be joined Saturday by the Gonzales family. Representatives from the city of Dallas and the area's neighborhood association have also been invited.

"FHLB Dallas' mission includes funding the affordable housing initiatives of our members," said FHLB Dallas President and CEO Sanjay Bhasin. "With this build, our employees will advance our mission even further by helping to build a Habitat home for a local family."

The Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity has plans to build 27 homes in the Joppa neighborhood, which is located near the Trinity River in southeast Dallas. Joppa (pronounced "Joppee") traces its roots to 1872 when it was established as a Freedman's town, whose residents were freed slaves from a nearby plantation. Today, it is recognized by Texas Historical Commission and is one of three remaining Freedman's communities in Texas.
