Ferre Qualifies for U.S. Senate Race
Maurice Ferre submits qualifying paperwork in Tallahassee
MIAMI, April 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Former Miami Mayor and Democratic U.S. Senate primary candidate Maurice Ferre made the following remarks on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at 4:30 p.m. on the steps of the Florida Capitol:
"On October 6, 2009 I started my quest for the U.S. Senate under the Democratic Party Banner. It has been a fascinating learning experience.
"I learned throughout Florida that:
- Floridians are not happy with the economy, job losses, house losses, uncertain future. Floridians are not happy with government, President, Congress, State and local politicians. There is a strong anti-incumbent feeling in this state.
- Floridians are distressed that there is constant bipartisan bickering. We are upset at both parties; the party of NO and hell NO, and the party that has not kept Barack Obama's campaign promises and is pushing projects from behind closed doors and not following the high levels of Americanism of FDR, JFK, LBJ and many other historic Democrats.
- Florida does want politicians that are not idealogues, that are pragmatic problem solvers and that have conviction and boldness to get the job done.
- Florida, more than anything else, wants political leaders that will put 'we the people' first, above party, above political financial donors.
"I will qualify today as a candidate for the U.S. Senate because I believe I am that person. Look at the donors list of Kendrick Meek, Charlie Crist, and Marco Rubio. Look at how they have spent their political funds. Who will they represent in the U.S. Senate?
"My opponent in the Democratic Primary, in four months, will be Kendrick Meek. Meek will have to respond to questions about his financial record and what he has done for his constituents in the eight years he has served in Congress.
"I would not be running if I did not feel I could win. In a three way race, if Crist runs as an independent, anything can happen. The winner will only need 34% plus, of the November 2 vote.
"The largest vote base in November will be Democratic. But the Democratic standard bearer must be electable. Lawton Chiles, Bob Graham, Reuben Askew, Bill Nelson, three U.S. Senators and three past Florida Governors, never had a 98.6% Democratic voting record. You cannot be elected in Florida for statewide elected office unless you are a centrist. The middle of the road is the high road to accomplishment. On cannot be elected statewide in Florida from the extreme left or from the extreme right.
"I thank my wife and family for their love. I thank my thousands of volunteers and helpers for their enthusiastic support.
"I look forward to the first debate with Kendrick Meek to define the substance of our campaigns. Florida needs bold, get the job done leadership in Washington!
"Florida has serious problems that need bold, common sense solutions, keeping America first. We need mature, experienced, rational people to bring back this greatest country in world history, to bring back to Florida 'happy days.'
"For those that do not believe in the possibility of victory for me, just you watch! The American dream, even the impossible dream, lives on. I tender my name for the honor of this high office with optimism, vigor, boldness and full of possibilities."
