Feeding America Volunteers Fight Hunger
April is National Volunteer Month
CHICAGO, April 29, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Feeding America today thanked the millions of Americans who volunteer at a food bank, meal service or grocery program. They also issued a call for more people to join in the movement to solve hunger in the United States.
Feeding America is the nation's largest domestic hunger-relief organization, providing meals and grocery products to more than five million people each week through a network of 200 food banks. Feeding America serves every county in the country.
"April is National Volunteer Month, and as the month draws to a close it is an appropriate time to thank the volunteers who are truly the backbone of our network and the lifeline of our nationwide charitable feeding system," said Bob Aiken, CEO of Feeding America. "It is also a time to ask other Americans to step forward and volunteer whatever time they are able.
"Our Hunger in America 2014 study found that in a typical month, nearly 2 million volunteers contribute more than eight million hours of their time by helping out at a meal program or food pantry served by the Feeding America network. That's more than 100 million hours of donated time over the course of a year," Aiken said.
Volunteers range from a senior citizen who helps with office work to a family that sorts and inspects donated food and a group of teens who help in advocacy work.
