Feeding America Mourns The Loss Of Former President And CEO Sister Christine Vladimiroff, OSB

CHICAGO, Sept. 26, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Feeding America is today mourning the loss of Sister Christine Vladimiroff, OSB, who served as president and CEO of the charity from 1991 to 1998, when the organization was known under a former name, Second Harvest.

Vladimiroff, a Benedictine nun, died on Sept. 25, in Erie, Pennsylvania. She was 74.

"We are very sad to learn of the passing of Sister Christine," said Bob Aiken, CEO of Feeding America. "Sister Christine spent her entire life in service to low-income Americans and others in need. She led our charity for eight years, longer than any other CEO who has served here. She made significant contributions to the growth and evolution of our network, which now provides food to more than 46 million low-income Americans every year."

During her tenure at Second Harvest she became one of the nation's leading authorities on the issues of hunger and poverty. Vladimiroff, was a frequent contributor in the media, and served as a panelist and speaker on the issue of hunger in the United States and abroad. She was regularly asked to testify before the Congress on issues of hunger and welfare reform, and helped shape national policy in those areas.

In 1997, the Clinton Administration appointed Vladimiroff as co-chair of the Advisory Committee on Food Security, a body responsible for providing policy advice and implementation guidance to the United Nations World Food Summit Action Plan.

Vladimiroff came to Second Harvest in 1991 from the Cleveland Catholic Diocese where she was Superintendent and Secretary of Education of the nation's sixth largest Catholic school system. She left Second Harvest to serve as prioress of her Benedictine Community in her native Erie, Pennsylvania. She received her undergraduate degree from Mercyhurst College), a Master's Degree from Universidad Interamericana, and a PhD from Universidad International, in Mexico.
