Feed the Children Stands Ready to Aid Those Affected by Hurricane Irma
OKLAHOMA CITY, Sept. 13, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- While still actively providing relief to those affected by Hurricane Harvey, Feed the Children is prepared to aid those left in the wake of Hurricane Irma's destruction. The organization has assembled 10 shipments of disaster supplies and is in direct contact with partner agencies on the ground to determine where to deploy relief items. Thanks to generous partners like StarKist®, Avon and Niagara Bottling, Feed the Children stands ready to lend a hand when natural disasters strike.
While millions watched as Irma raced toward Florida, several public companies and nonprofit organizations strategized how they could best meet the needs of families and children after the storm. Before reports of the devastation had even begun, StarKist made a cash gift of $75,000 to Feed the Children; Avon began selling $10 Avon Hurricane Relief Packages on avon.com that will provide and help distribute critical personal care items to support hurricane relief efforts; and Niagara Bottling stepped up with an additional 16 truckloads of bottled water.
"We remain committed to helping communities affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma," said Hogan Thomas, VP of Domestic Operations and Programs at Feed the Children. "This year's hurricane season has already shown itself to be dangerously active and it looks like more storms are possible. It will continue to take the collaboration of both private and public sectors to help those in need."
In addition to planned relief efforts to aid those affected by Irma, Feed the Children has taken action to help those affected since Hurricane Harvey made landfall by doing the following:
- Deployed more than 50 semitruck loads of disaster supplies, food and water valued at more than $2.6 million and weighing nearly 1.8 million pounds
- Trained hundreds of volunteers in communities across the Texas Gulf Coast
- Provided strategic counsel to local groups as they held supply distribution events
