FedEx Participates in United Way NCA Day of Caring to Support U.S. Troops on Presidents' Day
WASHINGTON, Feb. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In commemoration of Presidents' Day, FedEx team members volunteered at the Operation USO Care Package Warehouse on Fort Belvoir in Virginia for a United Way of the National Capital Area (United Way NCA) Day of Caring.
Days of Caring are coordinated by United Way NCA and offer local corporations the chance to volunteer for one of United Way's member charities, like the USO. The USO's mission is to lift the spirits of troops and their families.
"FedEx has been one of the strongest supporters of Operation USO Care Package. With their continued support and that of others, we are able to fulfill our mission of supporting the troops," said Jonathon Cannon, Director of the Operation USO Care Package program.
On Monday, 29 FedEx volunteers helped assemble 2,506 Operation USO care packages for service members deployed overseas. The care packages included items like combs, toothpaste, phone cards and crossword puzzles.
"Each and every FedEx team member took pride in assembling the USO care packages for our brave men and women in uniform and their families," said Brian Hughes, FedEx Express Managing Director of District Operations for the US Capitol Region.
Over the last five years, FedEx has been a proud supporter of United Way NCA and its member charities by helping to raise over $750,000 through workplace, corporate and in-kind giving.
"The United Way is very appreciative of the strong sense of social responsibility of FedEx. The outreach and support of the USO is a testament to their corporate culture of giving back to our community," said Bill Hanbury, President and CEO of United Way of the National Capital Area.
FedEx and its employees raise over $14M dollars for United Way Worldwide annually in addition to donated shipping and many hours of volunteer support by team members. FedEx has supported United Way for over 30 years, and is a proud member of its National Corporate Leadership group.
