Federally-Funded Lung Cancer Research Crosses $100M Threshold
Additional $12M Secured in the fiscal year 2016 (FY16) Department of Defense Appropriations Bill in the Congressional Directed Medical Research Program
WASHINGTON, June 2, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) announced that an additional $12 million for lung cancer research was included in the FY16 Department of Defense (DOD) Appropriations Bill under the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP). The bill was approved today in the House Appropriations Committee. This is an increase of nearly 15 percent over last year, bringing the total amount of federal funding secured to-date to $101.5 million. LCA worked to establish this dedicated pipeline in 2008 and has consistently secured millions for the lung cancer research community each year since.
"Another milestone has been reached for the lung cancer community, said Laurie Fenton Ambrose, President and CEO of LCA, as we have had our eye on breaching this threshold to help better support our research community from day one. We remain grateful to our lawmakers for their continued support of and investment in this much needed pipeline as it is contributing to our knowledge and understanding of how to better prevent, detect and treat lung cancer."
Since its inception, the CDMRP has funded more than 110 lung cancer research projects. The pipeline has supported research into non-or minimally invasive detection and screening tools, mechanisms leading to various subtypes of lung cancer, the progression to clinically significant lung cancer, prevention and treatment, predictive and prognostic markers to identify responders, among other innovative research endeavors. In FY2013, CDMRP also funded the Lung Cancer Biospecimen Resource Network, an open access bio repository that provides specimens for scientific research by academic centers and private industry worldwide. The collection contains specimens from over 750 patient specimens.
This funding announcement comes during the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists (ASCO). ASCO brings together 30,000 oncology professionals from around the world to discuss state of the art treatment modalities, new therapies, and ongoing developments in the field of cancer research.
The FY16 DoD Appropriations is expected to be considered by the full House of Representatives in the coming weeks. Details of the CDMRP can be viewed here: http://cdmrp.army.mil/lcrp/default.shtml
