WASHINGTON, July 25, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox Sr. released the following statement in response to the "Better Deal" agenda unveiled by Congressional Democrats:
"The American people win when we can earn a living wage for an honest day's work. We win when we can spend more of our money on our own family's needs, instead of paying more out of pocket for prescription drugs, groceries, and other everyday expenses. We win when Wall Street executives pay the same taxes as everyone else and when corporate mergers don't leave consumers holding the bag.
"Unfortunately, American workers have been losing out for too long. We have not seen real gains in wages or living standards in 30 years – even though American's economy and productivity have grown enormously during this time. Our share of the pie is shrinking, largely because workers have no one fighting for them. When workers have a strong union, they're able to negotiate for job security and better pay.
"I'm thrilled to see the Democratic Party recommit itself to its traditional focus on the interests of working people and their families. Working people continue to build and support this country, working hard, paying taxes, serving in our military, volunteering in our communities. It's time for lawmakers to recognize their right to a restoration of the American Dream for all Americans."
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is the largest federal employee union, representing 700,000 workers in the federal government and the government of the District of Columbia.
