Federal-Mogul's LKZ® Oil Control Ring Receives 2011 Automotive News PACE™ Environmental Award
Second Award for Innovation that Reduces Oil Consumption by up to 50 Percent
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., June 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Federal-Mogul Corporation's (NASDAQ: FDML) LKZ® oil control ring was named a 2011 Automotive News PACE™ Environmental Award winner on June 14 during the Automotive News Green Car Conference in Novi, Mich. The company's LKZ oil control ring innovation, along with its EcoTough®-coated piston—both of which contribute to improved fuel economy and emission reduction—were honored earlier this year with a 2011 Automotive News PACE™ Award.

"We are honored that our LKZ ring is again recognized for its significance to the auto industry," said Federal-Mogul President and CEO Jose Maria Alapont. "Vehicle manufacturers and consumers alike appreciate technical innovations that reduce oil and fuel consumption, as well as reduce CO2 emissions, while enhancing engine performance. Our LKZ ring delivers all of these attributes and is a prime example of Federal-Mogul's commitment to provide our customers with world-class, innovative products and services to meet their needs."
Federal-Mogul's LKZ oil control ring is an innovative two-piece oil ring for diesel and direct-injection gasoline engines. The patented ring reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions by decreasing oil consumption by up to 50 percent and in-cylinder friction by up to 15 percent, compared to the best conventional two-piece oil rings.
Typical piston rings apply equal pressure to the cylinder bore on the downstroke, toward the crankcase, and on the upstroke, toward the combustion chamber. Federal-Mogul's LKZ ring combines a stepped surface and taper on its contacting edge, which provides a well-defined pressure to the cylinder wall on the downstroke and a significantly lesser effect on the upstroke. The downstroke pressure more effectively returns the oil that lubricates the cylinder to the oil pan, as opposed to allowing oil to enter the combustion chamber, thus reducing oil consumption, improving fuel economy and reducing emissions, and avoiding the possibility of carbon deposits on the spark plug or on the cylinder head.
The PACE Environmental Award honors innovations in the automotive supplier industry that contribute to environmental sustainability or solve environmental problems. Environmental Award winners are selected from among the year's Automotive News PACE™ Award winners by independent judges, who are auto industry experts.
