Federal Investment in Neuroscience and Neurotechnology Hearing on Thursday, March 26
WASHINGTON, March 25, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, and Science (CJS) will hold a hearing on federal investments in neuroscience and neurotechnology this Thursday, March 26 at 10:30am in Room H-309 in the Capitol.
Led by Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02), lead Democrat on the Subcommittee, the hearing will examine the federal government's current neuroscience and neurotechnology priorities and the ongoing neuroscience efforts of the National Science Foundation (NSF), Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), and the White House BRAIN Initiative.
The 2015 Appropriations spending bill provided $105 million to NSF for investments in the BRAIN Initiative, neuroscience, and cognitive science. The bill also called for new efforts towards the establishment of a National Brain Observatory, enhanced attention to medical imaging, and support for a first-ever international conference on neuroscience.
Since becoming the lead Democrat on the CJS Subcommittee, Fattah has sought to elevate brain research as a legislative and funding priority in Congress. In 2011, he established the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative which aims to coordinate research across agencies, and draw upon public-private partnerships and the world of academia to promote research and discovery across brain cognition, development, disease, and injury. Congressman Fattah is also focused on collaborating with countries around the world to expand the scope of research, tools, support, and funding dedicated to the study of the human brain.
