CHICAGO, March 20, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago (FHLBank Chicago) was pleased to announce the first recipients of its 2018 Community First Awards during its member meeting in Oak Brook, Illinois yesterday. The awards recognize outstanding achievements of the FHLBank Chicago's member institutions and their partners as they work together to strengthen their communities through affordable housing and economic development initiatives. Award winners identify a nonprofit organization to receive up to $10,000.
Emerging Leader Award
James Rudyk, Executive Director of Northwest Side Housing Center in Chicago, identified Northwest Side Housing Center to receive the $10,000 award on his behalf. Northwest Side Housing Center has grown from eight to 27 team members, increased its operating budget by 300%, expanded its core homebuyer/homeowner educational and counseling services, and introduced specialized programs for women, children, and parents.

Project or Program Award
Shalom Center of Interfaith Network of Kenosha County, Inc. received a $10,000 award for its Shalom Center Homeless Shelter. The Shalom Center project transformed an industrial building into a 72-bed shelter and soup kitchen providing assistance with family dynamics, job searches, and financial literacy for community members in need of these services.
"First Business Bank is pleased to have partnered with the Shalom Center in making their new homeless shelter a reality," said Wesley M. Ricchio, President, Kenosha Market for First Business Bank, which provided construction and permanent financing, along with access to FHLBank Chicago competitive Affordable Housing Program subsidy.
"The Community First Awards spotlight the service, dedication, and ingenuity of these local heroes, as well as the critical support our member institutions provide them," said Suzi Thackston, FHLBank Chicago Community Investment Officer.
Two additional Community First Award recipients will be announced at meetings in Green Bay and Madison, Wisconsin.
