FCancer Announces Merger, Expansion And New Programs In Celebration Of 5-Year Anniversary
VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In celebration of FCancer's five year anniversary, Yael Cohen Braun and Julie Greenbaum announce the merger of their two entities, FCancer and F*ck Cancer, to form one unified non-profit. The two founders are dedicated to a joint mission in order to prevent and detect cancer plus empower their shared community, Generation Connected, to be the generation that ultimately improves health outcomes. FCancer aims to harness their cumulative experience to create further change and impact in the cancer space.
Since 2009, the two organizations have raised over $1.25 million towards cancer research and digital tools. A major part of the expansion includes a dynamic events model that will generate a self-sustaining revenue stream. These events will consist of large-scale parties that give young adults who have in any way been affected by the disease a completely unique bonding experience. These events, called FCE, will provide an opportunity for Gen C to feel a sense of ownership and unity and will help fund key programs. These programs include but are not limited to:
- De-stigmatizing the HPV vaccine in order to decrease the risk of cervical cancer, in partnership with the D-School at Stanford University, and the subsequent maximizing of vaccine coverage
- A first-of-its-kind digital screening calculator to produce a cancer-screening schedule
- Educational campaigns around sun exposure, smoking and other risk factors.
- FCancer public service announcements.
- Online and in-person support programs
Yael Cohen Braun founded FCancer in 2009 after her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her mission was to change the way people talk about cancer and educate the community on early detection, as 90-percent of cancer is curable when caught in stage one. Julie Greenbaum created F*ck Cancer in 2010 in honor of her mother who lost her life to ovarian cancer. In an effort to honor her mother's legacy, Julie began organizing events to raise funds and awareness for cancer research.
FCancer will maintain its founders strong and irreverent tone that first sparked both movements, but looks to grow with its community by adopting a more mature and sophisticated voice. To help guide the organization's new direction, FCancer has brought on Executive Director Heather Kun, PhD in epidemiology from Harvard who brings over 15 years of research, evaluation and health experience to the organization having worked most recently as Vice President of Research and Evaluation at the National Health Foundation and as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer for the CDC. Joanne Levy also joins the non-profit as Chief of Operations after 10+ years in media, launching a cutting edge creative & interactive agency called Trailhead9 and most recently serving as Senior Director of Interactive at Viacom Media Networks.
To celebrate 5-years of FCancer, the organization has partnered with Hot 97 to raise $100,000 and the All-American High School Film Festival to encourage young filmmakers to help spread its mission. Additionally, community members and supporters can celebrate by donating to the #5For5 campaign, which asks individuals to donate $5 and corporations to donate $5,000 to FCancer during the month of October.
