Fayette County Employer Earns Champion of Older Workers Award
HARRISBURG, Pa., May 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Jim Stevens and his company, Sonrise Security & Patrol, Inc. of Fayette County, are the newest additions to the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame of Champions of Older Workers, Department of Aging Secretary John Michael Hall said today.
"With his guiding belief in the tenacity, integrity and performance of older workers, Jim Stevens has all the right ideas," said Hall.
From its launch in 1987 to 2008, Sonrise Security & Patrol went from zero to $500,000 in annual sales with a staff of 30 employees. Of those, 21 are age 55 and older, including two employees over 65 and one over age 75.
Stevens formed Sonrise Security & Patrol after his retirement from the Pennsylvania State Police in 1986. The fully-licensed security firm provides armed and unarmed protection of property, operating in Allegheny, Washington, Fayette, Westmoreland and Greene counties and West Virginia. The company's strong mentoring program teams all new employees with experienced workers until they're confident in their assignment. Once trained in surveillance, behavioral studies and weapons use, job reimbursement is based on performance.
For recruitment, Sonrise uses the One-Stop System at the PA CareerLinks in Washington and Fayette counties as well as Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging's Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP).
The Champions of Older Workers program identifies, honors and promotes Pennsylvania employers who've made significant contributions in hiring and increasing opportunities for people 55 and older. Companies must be nominated. The awardees are chosen based on recruitment and retention of older workers, flexible working arrangements, mentoring and benefits.
