Fattah to Deliver Remarks at Philadelphia's Kick-Off for National GEAR UP Week
Students from 7 local high schools will participate in the event, which includes a college fair and workshops
WASHINGTON, Sept. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02), architect of GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs), the nation's most successful college-readiness program, will deliver opening remarks at the Philadelphia event kicking off National GEAR UP Week. More than 200 students and educators from seven Philadelphia high schools will participate in the half-day long event, which will include a college fair and workshops focusing on college admissions, scholarships, and financial aid. Participating schools include: Lincoln, Roxborough, South Philadelphia, Frankford, Ben Franklin, Edison, and School of the Future. Between 2009 and 2014, the program has served approximately 5,000 students in Philadelphia public schools.
Created by Congressman Fattah and signed into law by President Clinton in 1999, GEAR UP has impacted the lives of more than 13 million, mostly low-income students from 49 states who have participated in a GEAR UP program. GEAR UP Week is being observed across the country with events and activities that include rallies, televised school assemblies, essay contests, parent workshops and reunions of GEAR UP alumni currently attending or who have already graduated from college.
