Fattah to Deliver Remarks at National GEAR UP Conference in Philadelphia
WASHINGTON, Feb. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) will address more than 1,000 education practitioners at the 2015 GEAR UP Capacity-Building Workshop in Philadelphia on Monday, February 9. Fattah created the legislation for GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs), which was signed into law in 1998, and has since become the nation's most successful college readiness program. The GEAR UP conference is hosted by the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships (NCCEP) and draws GEAR UP teachers, parents, university faculty and staff, and business and philanthropic leaders from the 43 states the program currently serves.
In Philadelphia, the GEAR UP program supports programming for more than 5,000 students in the School District of Philadelphia, starting as early as grade six. New GEAR UP funding was awarded to Philadelphia last fall that will sustain and grow the District's GEAR UP programs at 11 high schools and 35 feeder elementary schools.
The Congressman's opening speech at the three-day conference will follow remarks by James Davis, GEAR UP Director at the U.S. Department of Education and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter.
