Fattah Statement on White House BRAIN Initiative Announcement
Congressman Fattah attended today's BRAIN Initiative Conference at the White House; Federal Agencies and private companies will commit more than $300 million in funding to support national neuroscience efforts
WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), a Senior Member on the House Appropriations Committee and architect of the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative, is attending the BRAIN Initiative Conference today at the White House where NIH is announcing $46 million in FY14 funds to support the initiative, and private companies will join with $270 million in additional research investments.
The Fattah Neuroscience Initiative is credited with forming the Interagency Working Group on Neuroscience (IWGN) housed at the White House, which was an impetus for the BRAIN Initiative. He released the following statement:
"Today marks an exciting new chapter for the United States BRAIN Initiative and I am proud to stand with the President, leaders from NIH, NSF, DARPA, and stakeholders across the neuroscience field and private sector as we announce these significant new investments in neuroscience research. As a result of today's announcement, more than 100 researchers in 15 states will have the financial support to develop innovative new tools and new technologies that will advance our understanding of the human brain. Through my work on the House Appropriations Committee, I championed the funding that made these grants possible.
"In April 2013, I was the only Member of Congress to join with the President at the BRAIN Initiative's launch in the East Room; since then I have worked through the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative to increase our country's neuroscience investments, expand partnerships amongst scientists, universities, and research centers across the globe, and join with leaders at NSF and DARPA on their efforts to support the BRAIN Initiative.
"Today we also welcome two new agencies—The Food and Drug Administration and the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity—into the coalition. Together, with their support, the continued backing of the private sector, and the alignment with new outside programs, the United States will be even stronger in leading the fight against the brain diseases that affect billions around the globe, and millions here at home. Collectively these announcements represent a huge step forward in developing new neurotechnologies, cures, and treatments, and I applaud the President for his willingness to put America at the leading edge of brain research."
