Fattah Statement on President's 2016 Budget Proposal
WASHINGTON, Feb. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02), Senior Member of the House Appropriations Committee and Ranking Member on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science (CJS) and related agencies, issued the following statement on the release of President Obama's budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2016:
"The President's FY2016 budget request lays out a blueprint for our country that emphasizes equality and access for all. President Obama has made clear that his budget is a reflection of our values as a country, and in doing so has prioritized investments in education, infrastructure, and medical research—issues that will make our communities and our citizens stronger. By investing in policies that will boost our middle-class, this budget would set us on a strong path forward that sustains the economic growth we have seen throughout the last year.
"Above all, the President and I share the belief that education has the unique ability to improve the life chances of all Americans. In turn, his budget not only champions innovative reforms like the America's College Promise plan, but makes an additional $1 billion investment in Title I funding, which would make significant headway towards supporting low-income schools and ensuring all students have access to a quality education. This budget also calls for a permanent extension of the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC), legislation that I crafted more than five years ago that has provided tax relief to millions of American students and their families. A permanent extension and expansion would continue to help families as they financially shoulder the burdens of sending children to college, while providing a partial credit to part-time students and making the credit available for a fifth year of higher education.
"As the architect of the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative, I am incredibly pleased that the FY 2016 budget includes funding for brain research programs in the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), and the Department of Defense. Additionally, it further invests in the BRAIN Initiative, a cross-agency effort I am proud to partner with on efforts to advance our global fight against brain disease.
"I join with my Democratic colleagues in strong support of this budget and look forward to working together with the Administration, and with my fellow members of the House Appropriations Committee, as we develop the government's spending priorities for FY 2016."
