Fattah Statement on President Obama's College Affordability Plan
WASHINGTON, Aug. 22, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah released the following statement in response to President Obama's College Affordability Plan announced today in Buffalo, NY.
Fattah is a recognized leader for college access and affordability for underserved students, and the primary sponsor of the American Opportunity Tax Credit, which provides a $2,500 tax credit for tuition and other expenses for college students and their families:
"President Obama and I share a vision of our nation boasting the highest number of college graduates in the world, and the plan the President announced today has the potential to bring our country even closer to this target.
"A college diploma can no longer be just a dream or a goal, it must be an expectation for our youth, and with that comes a responsibility for this country to make earning a degree accessible, attainable, and affordable.
"I have spent my career fighting to increase the gateways to higher education for America's youth. As the architect of GEAR UP—the nation's most successful college-readiness program—and my related work promoting dual enrollment programs, I know firsthand that increasing attendance, graduation, and college enrollment rates is not only possible, but within reach.
"As college tuition continues to rise, placing a greater burden on our middle-class families, it's imperative we guarantee that the success of our students comes first. I look forward to working with the President on initiatives that meet our shared mission of college access and completion."
