Fattah Statement on New Federal Guidelines for Educational Equity

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), a Senior Member on the House Appropriations Committee and co-creator of the Equity and Excellence Commission, released a statement on today's Department of Education announcement of "Guidance to Ensure All Students Have Equal Access to Educational Resources:"

"With the release of today's new federal guidelines, the Department of Education is taking a powerful step in defining and enforcing their role to ensure that every student regardless of their zip code has equal access to educational opportunities and resources.  I have spent my Congressional career advocating for educational equity across the United States and could not be more pleased with the monumental step that today's announcement represents.

"These new federal guidelines will advance President Obama's equity agenda and require more accountability from States, school districts, superintendents, and administrators around the country. This represents years of work from educational equity advocates and builds off of my own work: creating the Equity and Excellence Commission and introducing legislation, including the Student Bill of Rights, that seeks to eliminate the educational opportunity gap for low-income and minority students.
