Fattah Statement on Healthy Kids & Safe Sports Concussion Summit
WASHINGTON, May 29, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), a Senior Member on the House Appropriations Committee and architect of the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative, attended the Healthy Kids & Safe Sports Concussion Summit today at the White House. He released the following statement:
"I applaud President Obama for convening the first White House summit on sports concussions and his ongoing efforts to highlight this critical and timely issue. We want our children to be active, but we also want them to be safe and healthy. As we straddle this fine balance, it's important to bring the necessary stakeholders together to examine the current research and emerging studies that will help us better understand brain injury caused by sports.
"The Fattah Neuroscience Initiative is working across various sectors to fund brain research and to address some of the many issues being discussed here today, and it was an honor to be a part of the conversation. I commend the Administration's commitment to this issue, and Valerie Jarrett for her efforts to organize the summit. I am also pleased to see a widespread involvement of the sports community—especially NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who has made this issue a league priority.
"Today's summit is an impetus for the sports and medical communities to be more aggressive in raising awareness and funding new research relating to concussions caused by sports, and I look forward to continuing to be a part of these efforts."
