Fattah Statement in Support of Planned Parenthood
WASHINGTON, Sept. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02), a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement after Republicans in the House voted to defund Planned Parenthood. Fattah voted against the GOP bill, H.R. 3134:
"As a senior appropriator, I strongly object to today's Republican effort to defund Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing quality and necessary health care services to all men and women who need them. I have always supported this organization for their quality services, accessibility, and transparency. They will continue to have my support.
"Nationwide, 2.7 million men and women rely on the health care services that Planned Parenthood provides. More than 90% of these are lifesaving cancer screenings—including over 400,000 cervical cancer screenings and 500,000 breast exams each year—in addition to testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, family planning, and education.
"Planned Parenthood's services are an integral part of our national health care system with 87 percent of care going to low-income patients; their services and accessibility lower the systemic barriers to healthcare that many low-income families, minorities, LGBTQ, and young adults encounter. Efforts to eliminate funding for this organization will build yet another wall against these individuals and communities.
"The Republican effort to defund Planned Parenthood will cost this country more than we can afford. This legislation, H.R. 3134, will strain an already overburdened health system; in many cases, health care providers would need to more than double their caseloads to make up for the essential services this bill takes away.
"Planned Parenthood's services to American families and women are irreplaceable and I will continue to oppose any efforts in Congress to defund them or any other organization that provides women and families access to lifesaving health treatments and care."
