Fattah Champions Neuroscience Advancements With Scientists, Thought Leaders

WASHINGTON, July 30, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Continuing his longstanding commitment to neuroscience research, Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) will headline a webinar today entitled, "From Congress to Your Lab: How Federal Funding Affects Your Science." The event comes just a day after Fattah hosted a neuroscience briefing in Philadelphia in conjunction with the White House and as part of the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative (FNI).

Since becoming the lead Democrat on the Commerce, Justice and Science (CJS) subcommittee for the House Appropriations Committee, Congressman Fattah has elevated neuroscience research as a national priority.  The Fattah Neuroscience Initiative (FNI), created with support from the White House, is an innovative, non-incremental policy initiative seeking to achieve groundbreaking progress in understanding the human brain through a collaborative research approach.

Today's webinar, hosted by the Society for Neuroscience -the world's largest organization of scientists and physicians devoted to understanding the brain and nervous system, will educate scientists on effectively promoting their research efforts with Federal lawmakers. Congressman Fattah will emphasize the need for increased advocacy and engagement between scientists and Congress, citing the significance these relationships have in securing biomedical research funding.

On Monday, more than 40 thought leaders from throughout the Philadelphia region convened for a briefing on the current state of neuroscience research hosted by Congressman Fattah at the University City Science Center in Philadelphia. Attendees heard from Fattah and Dr. Philip Rubin, Principal Assistant Director for Science at The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Dr. Rubin delivered a presentation on neuroscience and provided an update on OSTP's work and the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative highlighting the importance of public private partnerships in advancing neuroscience research.
